What’s the Dish: November Events

Did I say I would be back, like, two weeks ago? Whoops. Sorry about that. I promise that I am still alive, healing up very well from my surgery. I’m not going to lie to you, Marge…I got distracted. With fandom. If you do not know the word “fandom” I suggest you either do a Google search or you run for the hills. I should have chosen the latter, but oh well. Here we are, nearly a month out and my inbox looks like a battlefield. My blog hasn’t been touched like a – okay, I won’t go there. I may insult someone. Anywho. I do promise I am getting back into the groove of things, slowly but surely. Lord knows I have content…I’m just incredibly lazy these days. Let’s blame surgery, okay? Okay!

WHAT: From October 1st through December 31st, Zengo at Santa Monica Place will be featuring their new Peru to Malaysia: Test Kitchen Menu. The inventive menu by Chef Richard Sandoval combines the bursting flavors of Peruvian and Malaysian cuisine to create unique small plates and specialty cocktails. (And you KNOW FROM MY POST how amazing this food is) A few menu items include:

  • Spicy Crab Potato “Sushi” (Avocado, Malay Curry, Crispy Corn Cancha & Soft Peruvian Purple Potato Cake)

  • Char Roasted Skate Wings (Ginger Chile Marinade, Crispy Lentil Rice Cake Sambal Butter Sauce & Charred Banana Leaf)

  • Arroz Con Mariscos (Mussels, Scallops, Calamari, Shrimp, Yellow Curry with Malay Rice & Thai Basil)

  • Toasted Coconut Profiterole (Toasted Coconut Ice Cream, Manjar Blanco & Chocolate Sauce)

    WHAT: Dominick’s is celebrating its 65th anniversary on Monday, November 4th and has planned a special night of dinner and drinks. The restaurant will be offering a one-night only menu featuring $.65 cent martinis all night long! Mini Vodka Martinis Shaken or Stirred 65 cents & Dinner for Two Prime Steak Pizzaiola with Spaghetti & Green Beans ($45) The regular menu will also be available (if you’re wondering about the food at Dominick’s, check out my coverage of the SAN GENNARO FEAST last year)

    WHAT: “Wine Riot is all about learning about wine but having a lot of fun at the same time.” Produced by Tyler Balliet and Morgan First of Second Glass (is a unique, tech-driven events company that brings together wine lovers of all ages and all levels of understanding of the modern wine industry). “Our goal for Wine Riot is to take the traditional snobbiness out of the wine tasting event experience and to make wine more approachable for everyone,” says Balliet. This year’s Wine Riot Los Angeles will feature over 35 wine booths representing almost every type of wine from around the world. Some of this year’s notable highlights at Wine Riot include:

    · Second Glass interactive mobile app

    · Wine 101 booth (new) featuring an introduction to tasting (e.g. oaked vs. unoaked)

    WHAT: El Cid continues its Tapas Tuesday Jazz Nights in November with the Tom McNalley Trio performing live. Guitarist Tom McNalley brings a new trio performing new original music featuring Jarrad Lander, electric bass and Matt Baker, drums, bringing fiery blues energy to jazz imagination. $5.00 cover charge; no minimum; $5 tapas and sangria specials; an extensive tapas menu and full bar with exclusive artisan cocktail creations.

    WHAT: Katsuya at The Americana At Brand has created a dedicated Movember martini that allows everyone to toast to this great cause. The Burning MANdarin martini was created in memory of The Americana At Brand employee who recently passed away from prostate cancer. The restaurant is proud to share that they will be contributing to the prostate cancer awareness fundraising efforts internally.
